Sierra Montessori Academy (SMA) is a K-8 California public charter school offering a Montessori education to students in the Sierra foothills. Sponsored by Nevada County, SMA is tuition-free and open to the public through an entrance lottery and open enrollment.
Located in South Nevada County just a few minutes north of Auburn, this school offers a private school environment where students are free to excel at their own pace.
The Montessori method is an integrated approach to education that takes into account individual variations in a child’s development and focuses on educating the whole child. Essential elements to the educational process are parental involvement, careful observation of each child's academic growth, and program choices that emphasize roots and wings:
Roots provide a stable foundation for the student by emphasizing ethics such as strength of character and honor, developmental qualities of initiative, persistence, concentration, curiosity, and self-confidence.
Wings give individual freedom to the student, providing the flexible curriculum that meets the needs and sparks the interest of the individual child and ensure that no child is held back.
